The First International Workshop on Nano Materials for Energy Conversion and Fuel Cell
From August, 21-22 of 2012, the ISE Sponsored Meeting, First International Workshop
on Nano Materials for Energy Conversion and Fuel Cell (NMEC-1), was taken place at the
University of Science, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM),
Vietnam. It is a joined effort between the University of Science/Applied Physical Chemistry
Laboratory, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, and Laboratory d'Electrochimie
et de Physico-Chimie des Materiaux et des Interfaces (LEPMI), Grenoble Institute of
Technology (France) to host this event.
Currently, Vietnam is one of the countries that strongly endure the effects of global
warming. Therefore, the renewable and sustainable energy is a matter of great interests of
Vietnamese government. This is the first time that an international conference on application of
nano-materials in energy conversion happened in Vietnam. The purpose of this event was to
introduce high-impact research in the field of nano-materials for energy conversion and
preservation as well as to explore new discoveries in fuel cells, solar cells, lithium batteries,
nano-catalysts and electrode materials. This workshop is also a place to network, exchange in
formation, as well as strengthen the ties between attending scientists all over the world in the
field of nano-materials.
There were approximately 140 attendees from 12 countries (Australia, Denmark, France,
Israel, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, United States, and the host country,
Vietnam), including professors, scientists, lecturers and experts in the fields of applied nanotechnology
in energy conversion and fuel cells. 70 presentations were presented during this
workshop in the forms of oral and poster presentations. 16 invited speeches were made by
famous international scientists, including Professors B. Yakobson (USA), T. Miyasaka, M.
Nogami, Y. Kawazoe, Y. Maeda (Japan), E. Djurado, T. Pagnier (France), H. Lim (Korea) and
D. Aurbach (Israel).
As an extension to this workshop, on August 23rd, 2012, three special-topic lectures in
Photoelectrochemistry and advanced engineering for solar conversion and storage, Raman
spectroscopy of materials, and Materials for solid oxide fuel cells were given at the University
of Science. These lectures were taught by Professors T. Miyasaka, T. Pagnier, and E. Djurado,
NMEC-1 could not have been held successfully without the contribution and support of
many organizations and people. We highly acknowledge the support of Ministry of Science and
Technology (MOST), National Foundation of Science and Technology Development
(NAFOSTED), Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG), Asian Office of Aerospace R&D
(AOARD), Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), and many other organizations and
companies. We would like to thank all the authors, invited speakers, tutorial presenters for their
contribution to the scientific program of the workshop. We would like to express our gratitude to
all the personnel of the organization and program committees, who have contributed much time
and efforts to bring a big success to the First International Workshop on Nano-materials for
Energy Conversion and Fuel Cell.
